Quiet Restraint

Whiskeytown Lake after sundown. Only sounds are a few passing cars on Hwy 299 behind me, geese honking in the distant darkness and crickets playing their songs.

The chain in the foreground links out to buoys that hold a thermal curtain that blocks warm water from the lake's surface from going into a tunnel leading to the Sacramento River. There is about a 30-foot gap between the bottom of the curtain and the bottom of the lake, allowing cold water to flow into the tunnel.
